Moments with Maximus

Our hikes used to be measured in hours and miles.
These days, they're measured differently.
Now they look like sitting together at the local lake. Short walks on
flat, grassy paths. Gentle swims when the weather allows. Time spent
noticing more and rushing less.
He still seeks out the sun, settling in wherever the light falls warmest.
When we're at the lake, he'll still swim out for a stick, even if it takes a little
longer to get there. Despite the changes, Maximus still finds joy in the simple pleasures.
The lake has become one of our favorite places. Not because we go far, but because
we're there together. Water moving softly. Birds calling. The kind of quiet that
doesn't ask for anything in return.
He's slower now. His pace has changed. My pace has slowed too. We are growing older
together.
But his love hasn't.
If anything, it's grown larger-- more patient, more present, more generous.
My love has grown too, deepening with each passing day.
He leans in closer. He lingers longer. His patience and presence have taught me
to do the same. I find myself more patient, more present, savoring the moments
we share.
He reminds me daily that life isn't diminished when it slows.
It simply asks us to pay attention.
Age is not the end of the story. Some of our best moments together happen
when we are completely still.
